Cacophonous Symphony
I spent three days trying to perfect this image in Barathpur. I wanted a full frame image of the thousands of these Ducks and Geese taking flight captured in slow shutter. Our last three days in Barathpur were fogged out with visibility reduced to few hundred feet. With very little else to do I started to experiment with different shutter speeds to get this kind of a shot, where the form of the bird was visible, but yet wanted to blur out any individual form in the thousands of other individuals over populating the frame. I wanted to have a very "Busy" picture to convey the rush when a Harrier swoops down low on a flock of ducks and geese. And with the fog reducing visibility the harriers were having a field day swooping really close to their prey before they realized the danger and took to flight. This was one such occasion when the Harrier got real close to a very huge flock of ducks and geese. This also happened on our last morning in the park when I had arrived on a close enough estimate of the shutter speed required for this kind of a shot, based on my experiments over last two days. And the sensation when the birds in their thousands flew overhead is something I seriously hope to recreate with this image. As said I have multiple variations of this image and funnily enough I never realized that this shot was the "LAST" shot taken in an attempt of creating this image.
I used Shutter Priority with a shutter speed of 1/30 sec with a f22 to get this image.

Lovely one! I too was engaged in precisely the same attempt with the flying ducks, experimenting with various shutter speeds to capture the right effect, and I agree that choosing just the right speed is the greatest challenge with this kind of an image. I think you've done remarkably well here in attempting to convey your previsualised design. The feeling of busyness is certainly there, and the tight composition works very well to emphasise the over-crowding in limited space and a sense of frenetic panic to get away from clear and present danger. Is the pale pinkish cast natural or introduced in PP? I don't know what the thoughts of others here are about a possible (slight) contrast boost. As it is the vagueness and low profile look of the image make it powerful enough, but I'm wondering whether it could be given further oomph with some contrast. Or perhaps it is my insipid monitor again. I guess that bit is subjective at the end of the day anyway. Overall I really liked this image. Centrefold stuff!

Santosh the pale pink hue is due to the fog in the BG as you know, and as far as I can tell the fog looked something like what I have, but it would be interesting to see your version as well. Boost in contrast? Let me see how it works out, as this image already has a fair share of contrast added to it, and I am always worried about overdoing stuff which results in over processed images. :)
