The Glow
Its Fire fly season again, though my dream image of thousands of these "Illuminated" individuals flying about, still remains elusive, I got another opportunity to do this image today. The challenges with shooting these creatures are immense. The most obvious one being the absence of light. But I wanted to use that as the main advantage in showcasing just how beautiful these twinkles are in the darkness of the night. I wanted to get the "Cool Green" glow. I initially used a very mild diffused torch light to light up the entire body, but that was killing the glow, and making the picture dull, so I decided to do without the external light source and just get a picture of the "glow" rather than that of the insect. And this it the final result. Image noise was inevitable due to the high ISO used. The firefly season has just begun, so I am hoping to give this subject a few more tries in the future if conditions permits.

Thanks for looking

I know your challenges here Harsha, it is *just not easy* ! That said, I would still think of possibilities to light it with an external light source to get it better defined. I think key is you need have a light source such that the intensity of reflected light from an external source should be less than emitted light from these flies. May be you can try blue LED flash light from a far off distance or with weak batteries in it. Blue light also may enhance the feel/mood of night. Best of luck next time !

I loved your firefly image and also what Ganesh suggested. I think you can try it out and am eagerly waiting to see the results.
