Its a small wide world after all!
Wide angle macros! An exciting new possibility I have been trying off late.

Habitat shots have a very unique life of their own. They have the power to tell the entire story about the animal and its surroundings in just one frame. Well, these damsel flies, I noticed skim along the stream on the shallow and quieter flowing water. They perch on rocks as if watching for something and always perch for only about a minute or so before taking off. The subtle ripples on the water and the cool dark jungle in BG complete the story of this beautiful fly living in its habitat.

It was fun trying to make this image as these damsel flies are not the most photo friendly critters. And as the light was very harsh, I was facing challenges getting the exposure on the damsel fly and the BG right. To combat that I flash illuminated the fly (-3 stops) just enough to render its details.

Thanks for looking

Agree with you Harsha about wide angle macros ! My facination too these days. But it is very challenging. The most difficult part being creating emphasis on the main subject since the frame covers a lot more. In this one I think increased flash output plus reduced exposure time would have helped dim the bg by about a stop to emphasize damselfly ? Just my thoughts..

Interesting perspective here Harsha. There is nothing better than Visualizing the beings in their best possible habitat. It's just heartening to see more and more people realizing about including the 'essential clutter' rather than looking for close portraits. Beautiful image this. Yes, I agree there will always be some technical issues but the DOF in the images is just spot on.

One of the finest executions of the wide angle macro, reminds me of my image http://www.indianaturewatch.net/display ... p?id=86170. The possibilities of getting a wide angle macro is many but to get a frame with details to sustain the interest in the macro subject is a big challenge. The use of fill flash is just right. One of nice ones in the genre I have seen in recent times.

My Favourite ----- wide angle macro photography !!! I have no regrets in saying that even though am trying too, I have not been able to pull out a beauty like this one. Superb image Harsha. I agree with Ganesh on the reduced exposure time for the bg to get dim by about a stop while keeping the damselfly in the same light.
