Eleph-ants - a small try
Going to a National park or for that instance any place already frequented by many always poses a challenge of how differently can you portray the place through your own eyes. Corbett is no different when it comes to photographing elephants. Elephant images from this place are done and overdone. And after the usual routine "Spray and Pray" way of photographing elephants for the first couple of days i was asking myself how can i try something different from this place. During one of our post dinner discussions one of my friend Vinay who was along with me during the trip used this phrase "Eleph-ants". So armed with a fullframe sensor body and a wideangle lens i dedicated couple of safaris just for this. To make things different i tried to get an elevated point of view and how i came up with that was using a TRI-AL Cam method. If you guys are wondering if this is some new gear that i have accquired or something .. sorry you are wrong. I converted my tripod to a monopod and mounted my gear and placed the monopod on top of the gypsy roof and got an additional 7ft elevation and fired the frames using a remote shutter release. Composition is a huge challenge as you cant see what you are shooting when the camera is at that height above the ground level.
Above is one of such images i made of an Elephant heard using a 50mm lens. Shall share some more images made using even wider lens at a later date, but until then would like to know your views on how this suits your taste buds :)
Composition is def something which could have been better but somehow the scale of elephants against the grassland made it look a bit better for me.
Hoping to get few frames from my friends who happened to click me using this funny looking setup during the safari and had their own share of laughs later on in the day when we all met for dinner so that i can show you how it looks like :)

My guide was puzzled looking at your strange camera setup which was extending to sky :) It made a nice difference and love this angle. If the elephants are closer I think the impact will be still stronger. I hope to buy a longest monopod before going to Corbet next year :) Nice experiment here Shiv..

Nice image Shiva, I was just wondering if it would look better without the black frame? The sense of space and openness in the image somehow seems to be lost

I can understand what you are referring to Harsha. I too was not comfortable using black and its not the one that i use for my site too off late too. But just went for it. But will def consider your suggestion for the next set of images.

Nice try there surely.

Now here is a case for an articulating LCD like on the Nikon D5000 or one of those movie hydraulic booms. Or another tech solution could be use a tether/ ( connect via wifi ? wonder if the wifi attachments also help connect liveview to the computer....than just file transfer) to the camera and compose on the laptop. Was thinking on these lines for a low angle shot actually.

I liked it. Yes Animals need to be closure to get more effect on your high angle shot.
I am of the same opinion on why we have go several times to national parks if we are trying same old straight angles, composition, techniques etc. You may shoot less, but shoot differently.

Good attempt Shiv. However as you said, with 50mm the sense of smallness is not that much evident. As you have told that you have wider perspectives, I would wait to see those images. The idea is very nice but I am not convinced with the result. Honestly in this image it doesn't feel that you have made the image from that height. The sense of height and the sense of smallness is lost somewhere. What do you feel?
Will wait for the wider image.

Shiv, a wider angle view including some more of sky would have given the feel of eleph-ants here. these ants are too big convey that perspective;-) nice thought and effort, though. TFS.

A lovely image Shiva, but the black border seems to hold up the image's central idea of openenss
