Ears
Friends, sorry for not being able to participate much thanks to lots of other tasks at home which became priority of late. Posting an image after a long break. Made this last week when I was on a short visit to LRK. I have another image
here. Keen to know which one works better for you (if it works) and why. Thanks !

Hi Ganesh!
What an image to start with!!! The mood in the image is so endearing I feel like coddling them. Looking away images have a special sway on me. It brings in the feel of looking at the unknown. Soft tones on the cubs make the scene very intimate. The other shot can not be compared with this. Both are so different. This one has a meditative calm about it whereas the the other one has more of play. If I were to pick one I would go for the shot here for it has achieved a greater degree of silence than the other one has managed depiction of play.
Thanks for sharing

Actually both works for me Ganesh. If both the cubs were in focus am thinking it would have emphasized the sense of companionship or friendship strongly in this image. I love the overall mood in this image. The other image seems to have magical lighting. Not sure if it was because of the way it was processed or within a short duration light change did occur.

I feel like coming back to this one time and again such is its appeal. It throws up so many things at the same time. Family, intimacy, silence, peace, security being some of the attributes. Beautiful!!

The tenderness of the cubs that you have brought out in this image is just fantastic! As NirlepJee said, the silence and the meditative calm found here makes it for me!

Both images are stunners Ganesh! I've been looking at this one almost all evening, it has such a soothing, calm effect and is a visual treat!

Thank you :)

This is amazing sir, I loved the whole series on your site. The processing is just too good.
The bright OOF FG and the dark BG really make for a nice setting.
Like Mahesh said, I too wish the second pup was also in focus, another name for the image could be "Brothers"

Commentby krishnan v on Fri Feb 24, 2012 12:09 pm

Yes, I like this one better :-)

Perhaps I like it better because this one has fewer elements and fewer tones.
Since I am forcing myself to look and also articulate ( hard job ) , may I add that, the complementary tones in the upper and the lower parts of the frame work well.
Also, the eye automatically travels from the pups to the tree / bush on the far right.
I am fine with one subject in focus.

Ganshi, I would really love to know your thoughts here on the square presentation. Something you had to get rid of or was it done to generate more concentration on the perspective of alertness ? Am allowing myself to be led into the frame using your caption and hence more than any other thoughts, the instinct and alertness to pick up the slightest sound which might have alerted them is connecting me more than any other thoughts. There is more natural history in the image than it appears from the frame at first look, probably they had a visual too of what made them so alert. The reason I asked about the square crop is I was wondering if some more space on the right of the bush would enhance the mood. Love the tone.....brave cubs too, appears they were not very shy, am assuming you used the same lens you were using in Gujarat. Am sure you can think of another caption related to this ? :-), EARS sounds too anatomical....This image is definitely about the power of the senses gifted to these animals for their survival. Would love to read your thoughts......

Ganesh, this is you at your best! Like I said elsewhere, the angle, the back-light creating an almost heavenly halo around the pup and the blurs creating an ethereal feel and the soft fur on the back of the pup in focus make this an absolute masterpiece! The more I look at it, however, the more I feel that the out-of-focus pup is distracting me; I really think I'd have loved it to be in focus but again like I said elsewhere, stopping down might have robbed the exotic feel of the foreground and background blurs, so can't complain.

By the way why do we need to choose between the two images? Both are fabulous in their own right, in very different ways. While this one pushes my back to the chair in deep thought, the other one makes me fall off it. One is good for mental health and the other for physical welfare. ;-) Thank you for sharing both!

Thank you all friends for your views.

First of all these are the images of Indian Fox cubs. I made this using 400mm f2.8 lens (thanks to Dhritiman who spared his camera/lens) (Nilanjan, nope, not TS lens). I agree Ears is very anatomical - I was feeling guilty for not posting for almost a month so wanted to make a quick post :) Thanks for better title suggestions.

Back to the question on square crop, I did try different crops but I wanted to give a little more visual weight for the one on left and settled down on this composition. Secondly, of late, I kind of think 35mm has an 'art-unfriendly' aspect ratio. Not sure whether I should attribute this to seeing 35mm for 15+ years. I some how started thinking length is too much ! Too bad I need to loose so many pixels. Wish I could afford a medium format :)

Why compare this one with this one? Personally I liked this above one a lot more than the one in my site. I have made about a few hundred images of these little ones. But when I saw this one in the view finder I knew I got an interesting perspective. For my taste buds this one is very open compared to the other. I think the first one in my site is more for eyes and this one is for the mind. Just wanted to find out what you all think - hence the question. I know we all are coded differently, there is no right or wrong answer here.

Here is a non square perspective of the same -

Image

Which one works better ? this one or the above square crop ?

Thanks again for your thoughts !

200% agree on the aspect ratio of 35mm. At times it really does make on feel wish there were more pixels on the top and bottom and instead we are left with millions of underutilized pixels along the longest side. Anytime I like this image. You know, I was about to tell you that the foreground looks very much like Dhriti's images and here you had his lens and camera. I saw the video in which Dhriti was lying down under the nose of the cubs, thought he made you crawl into the bush too :-). Now, looking at this very subtle aspect of alertness which you have shown in this image, the composition works fine. I personally feel the second cub in shallow DOF is balancing well, as Santosh pointed out, stopping down would have killed the fg and bg. Among the two this one is certainly working better for me as these days the subtle behavioral aspects connect me more than dramatic events. Thanks for sharing the info dear....
