Portrait of a baby
They came close, they were comfortable, they did their thing. These elephants on the grasslands of Sri Lanka. This baby was pink, suckling, and stuck close to two females that carefully guarded him. Their trunks were constantly on guard too, smelling surroundings... and touching each other, reassuring.

i made this image because to me it sets context. It gives me a glimpse into the baby's comfort zone, while at the same time capturing some of the environment it lives in.

I like that little eye and the expression in its face Arati. I would retain the trace of the another element on the top right (if there is another view point to crop that out:) ). I think the bright white border is over powering the frame. Thanks for sharing.

I would go for a tight crop, the elephant on the top right corner distracts. Going monochrome with a warm tone has worked well, in color I don't think one could bring about this kind of emotion on the young calf. Thanks for sharing.

Ganesh ... Yes, i too loved the expressions on this baby's face - i have one of it suckling and its eyes are wild in that! :)

i am struggling with the border concept :) Looking at printing, thinking therefore of mattes. And thinking of borders in that respect. I played with sliders (in this case also) and finally thought white was best. But i had no "a-ha" moment in that process. Need to get a feel for this yet.

Vikram, Ganesh: about the elephant in the top corner - i purposely included it while framing the shot in the field since i felt it gave a lot of context. I also tend to like repetitive motifs at different layers in my images. What i did crop out were the ears of the mother and other adult female (foreground) and made it a square crop.

Thanks guys for chiming in...comments are what make this forum for me!

Have come back to this image several times in the last couple of hours Arati.. It is a beautiful composition, I love the oof elephant in the top right of the frame, the imposing length of the mother's legs and trunk in comparison to that of the baby, the grass, I could go on.. :)

That teeny weeny little trunk :) :)

I would probably crop the image to the point where the elephant in shallow dof in the bg gets completely excluded, but I would need a lot of space to the right of the trunk, The elephant in the bg is really not contributing for my taste, where as the mother's nipple, trunk is definitely contributing to understanding the relationship and in order to do some justice to the wide lovely eyes, I would include some void space on the right to create the mood as if the mother is telling the baby, all this will be yours with time. Just my thoughts Arati.....and I do not like this tone, oopppss, sorry :-).

Radz! thanks girl.

Nilanjan-da: believe it or not, when i chose this tone, i thought to myself "nilanjan-da will not like this tone :)" but i liked it, so what to do?!

While i appreciate your point about the mom-baby, it looks like Ganesh anticipated correctly that there will be two camps here - one liking the oof elephant in the corner and one intensely disliking it!! :)

Thanks all... i am exploring different ways to portray a scene and all this helps me understand my own inclinations!

Absolutely fine, you have to stand by your choice and conviction, the image has to be more closer to your heart than ours :-).

Amazing click and has got a nice frame in it... your frame with the other elephant in the background is wonderful. I can take a wild guess, that baby elephant is reaching out to his mother and asking her.. " hey mother, other far elephants look smaller than me..so what should I be?..a baby or far to you?"..

This is what I felt looking at this pic..

Sweet! :) I like the framing and the warm tone and I think the oof elephant does add a bit more to the image. Agree with Ganesh Sir on the border.

Thanks Pavan and Sarang... it is nice to see the image through your eyes and how it speaks to you - how you interpret it.

Nilanjan-da - i have a version with a lot more space in front of the trunk... that is how i had shot it (cropped square here) - it does breathe and allow the mind to wander... :)

thanks all!
