Smoking Tusker
After charging us, this Giant walked down to a small lake, had a grand bath, came out and powered himself with the ashy dust.

I just love the light and near B&W feel here (is it s color verson ? B&W ? Toned ? ). I think this is a puzzle in composition. Before I add my thoughts I would like to know what others think from composition perspective. Will wait for more views to pour in....

@ Ganesh: Very little colour, more of Black and white... waiting for more views on the composition.

hi hrishikesh, i love the feel and the scene here ... about the composition, i would leave more space on the left ... allow the tusk and the ear to breathe more and seem like it is enveloped in the smoke. probably do a 4:3 crop and center the head - it would still occupy the top left diagonal anyway... that would be my take.

really nice one, i have come back to enjoy the elephant many times!
:)thanks

Thank you Arati. This image is cropped and there is lot of scope, for your suggestion. Waiting for some more views from other members. Will upload one more version later. Thanks again.

My first impression of seeing the image was more space on the left would have added (so I wanted to hold on to read others' thoughts too). But the second thought was
"why?" Is it because we seem to consider it "more balanced" when we have space against direction of eyes/head ? Is that a good enough reason to apply that 'logic' to every image we
make ? But then it becomes monotony. Isn't it ? What you think ?Breaking for the sake of breaking might start looking fresh - of course that can't continue beyond a few images. There are
other meanings for such compositions as well (a related discussion in this related thread )

Would appreciate any related thoughts...

Hands down agreed with you Ganesh when you mentioned
""why?" Is it because we seem to consider it "more balanced" when we have space against direction of eyes/head ? ".
That was my thought process. I am not sure if this kind of composition can be done for many or every image, but sometimes when you see a shot on a computer screen, such compositions start standing out of the picture itself. only such images, could be experimented with i guess. Thank you very much for your views Ganesh.

If there wasn't as much drama happening on the left, i would agree with you ganesh. But for this image, i feel we are chopping the drama short by the current composition :) i agree there are many images where you can chop and go for an "unconventional" composition. but to me, this image would benefit from the full blown drama - pun intended!! :D

You are right Arati, but I am seeing another drama, more of an emotional one (for me) that is towards right side of the frame which centers around the closed eye on left and darkness on right. For me the light and dust brackets the mood around the eye of it. So I would give dust a supporting role here and the eye the main role. Different ways of seeing, no right or wrong answer.

But aren't these discussions helpful to grow as photographers ?

Oh yes Ganesh, i really believe these discussions will strongly contribute towards the learning curve of photographers (especially me). Really fascinates me to look at this image from yours and Arati's perspective.

Aaah i see what you mean, Ganesh - but then, i would not include the tip of the right tusk at all ... then i would play up the eye and maybe even crop about 20 px off the left (sacrifice the right ear of elephant completely)

You bet, about the discussions helping us!! i think i sound like a stuck record, i always keep saying... this is what makes cnp so special!

Arati Madam, why this Kolaveri on the Tusker ;-)....... JUST JOKING, please don't mind. Eliminating anything from the elephant may not work well. The effect of the dust is enhanced by the full view of the Tusk. According to me, this effect is keeping image and the title connected. What Say?
