Orca Art
Hello,

I tend to like dramatic light - backlight, sidelight, back/toplight - actually pretty much anything other than direct front light. I also like (whenever possible) to "abstract" my wildlife images so that they're equally as much about simple compositional elements (like lines, pattern, contrast, etc.) as they are about the animals themselves. This task isn't always easy, but I find it challenging and enjoyable (and, once in awhile, I even manage to get some unique images).

I photographed this female Killer Whale (or Orca) and its calf in a high-contrast situation with very strong back-lighting. Orcas are powerful, majestic animals and I wanted a powerful composition to complement the whales themselves. The water droplets in the air are from a strong "blow" made by the whale a second or so before I captured the image (as the female whale surfaced).

Comments and critiques welcomed.

If anyone is interested in the creative and technical details relating to the image (both before and after exposure), they are available in detail for this image on my website (http://www.naturalart.ca/galleries/mammals/other/). I hope this isn't considered offensive as self-promotion - I'm just thinking that some photographers may find the information interesting or useful...

Cheers...

Brad

What an image Brad ! I saw this some time back on your front page of your website - I kept staring at it for some time then.

You have a very creative composition here. I like the way you have used dominant contours of the whales and of course the water splash combined with dark background made this image for my taste. I also like the way you have used harsh light to your advantage here. I tend to think dark background and deep blue colors also seem to add some mystery feel to the image. Overall you have winner here - an image with NatGeo image appeal in my view. If you have have another image which shows some more of the front whale I would love to see that !

Thanks for sharing the other link too. We often see requests here to share EXIF,processing details etc. I am sure photographers will find this information useful. We did not insist on sharing the technical details (lens, camera etc) in our posting guidelines since we feared discussions taking Canon Vs. Nikon route :)

Thanks for sharing the image..

This is art of seeing as i can put it. Fantastic visualisation Brad. I remember seeing this and one more "Orca Calf Blowing" in a collection in your site. The black and mild blue tones in this image is really making this a winner for me and not to second the water droplets.

As you have mentioned it is really tricky and challenging to capture subjects in un-conventional lighting situation like backlit and side lit and harsh light - but that said the result on can get with proper control is unbeatable.

Lastly though we are interested we are not too keen on the equipment aspect because We belive in the fact that art is the result of the artist behind the equipment and not just the equipment.

Thanks for sharing this and bringing a good start to our day.

This image stands out, a true representative of the ocean world. The tonality and the subjects interaction is of a very high order. I also tend towards very contrasty light and this is impeccably timed. Would love to see a wider version of the same.

Hi Brad,
Welcome to CNP forum and we are proud to have you here. Very great abstract wildlife image here. Very evenly distributed water spray, blue tone body and tail makes an image for me with an appropriate composition. I like it as it is. Thanks for sharing.

A fantastic impact of the contours is what makes the image great for me. The splash added to the beauty of the image and the dark tones are holding me very tight. Excellently framed image with great control on the execution. Thanks for sharing.

Beautiful image Brad. I like the dual color rendition which strongly separates foreground and background. The image is able to convey power through strong lines of the mother and tenderness through calf in tow. The blow in the background completes the plot.
Great shot!!

Hi Brad, sticking to aesthetics and delivering strong Abstracts are the most challenging things for a photographer,
Light, Lines and the backlit water splash completes the image perfectly.
