Jungle - A Portrait
About five decades ago, as a very young kid I spent most of my childhood with my grand mother. Having lost her husband a few years after her marriage her fate brought her back to live rest of her life with her brothers. She then was given the job of looking after livestocks (buffaloes and cows). For some reason I ended up living with her away from my parents as a very young kid. We were living close to foothills of Western Ghats. We had a buffalo named Raati which rarely used to return from jungle. I used to accompany my grandmother to jungle to bring our livestocks back home. It was very rare to see another human in the jungle then. On the way she use to tell me stories of jungles, her childhood days, how tigers used to lift our livestock, that the tigers were found very close our livestock at home when she was young etc. I remember she telling me the story of a cow named Roopa among our livestock, how Roopa managed to escape from the clutches of a tiger. Those stories were narrated to me on our way to jungle in search of our livestock. I used to get goosebumps then. This image kind of portrays the feeling I had about secretive jungles, a portrait in that sense. It is unfortunate that these elusive beauties have disappeared over years. It is unfortunate I can't photograph them as often. Probably I don't need to, as it does not matter.

May their tribe increase.

I am seeing this image and reading your story while opening this image {Another fine one from Ghanshyam). Music is running in the background. Music is perfectly gelling with your image. Thanks ghanshyam for suggesting the music for this image :) Makes me nostalgic (of what? I am not part of your image, yet I feel it is mine and miss these...)

Coming back to the image, it is very very powerful, very raw and coarse. Liked this a lot.

Made me nostalgic too Ganesh! Even i used to go on the look out for cows and buffaloes. I dont think there is a way out, we are loosing a lot from generation to generation. Its a great image, which portrays the essence of the story. TFS

What makes it a great experience the story or the image....they go hand in hand the story in your heart and the image from your memory ....we have the image inside us we need to bring it it consciousness and be able to recognise the physical reality when it comes to us...... do we go seeking it or does it come seeking us....does not matter I suppose

You think the bright leaf in front can be toned down a bit?

Thanks, Raj. Actually, I opened up the bright leaf and made it a slightly more brighter to hide the tiger!
