Philautus Neelanethrus
This image is dedicated to Dr Gururaja KV who along with others found this new species in deep jungles of Katthalekana, without whos help I would not have made this image.

Back to the image, learning never ends. It has been for some time I wanted to understands a bit of B&W photography - there is lot to learn there. I have always been puzzled - what characteristics of a subject makes it best suited for B&W photography. Recently I have spent some time trying to understand some science part of it. Looks like I am getting some clues but long way to go however. Here in this image I wanted to emphasize the origin of its name - beautiful blue ring around its eyes - "Neela" means blue in Sanskrit, and "Nethra" means eye.

Thanks for your views..

Sir,
I very well remember seeing this frog on your site. Emphasizing Blue in BW was confusing for me. Then thought, may be equal emphasis is given to all the color tones in the colored one and in this BW picture the white ring [which is blue in color] clearly stands out which you wanted us to see.
Please correct me if I am wrong.

Hi Madhavjois, in my view this is where we get into some art vs science discussion. During the color conversion 16million colors need to get mapped to just 256 different shades of grey. The art part is in how we want to map these millions of colors into just 256 shades of grey. Obviously there are different mappings possible and of course different ways of controlling the conversion depending upon the effect we want to achieve. Correctness of such mappings (if one exists) belongs to more of science than art. Even in traditional B&W photography using B&W film people rely on different color filters to alter such maps (yes, different colored filters are used in black and white photography) - so controlling such color conversion map existed even before Photoshop was written.

Added on 29th - Madhav, just want to add, simple conversion to grey scale (one of the maps) does not yield this result !

Wooooooo... quite creepy ! love the fact that the nostrils are blurred out. Otherwise, the viewer would make out the face easily and the image would lose some of its awe factor :).. would have liked it even better if the dof was even shallower and the blown out nose was more contiguous with the lower jaw !! thats just being really greedy !
having said that would also like to see the colour version, just to have a better look at neelanethrus :)

Sir what ever you do, you seem to make it into a fad. I have for some reason never been able to think of images without color. Color for me has always played a very significant role. But now I am asking myself, Why? Why have I been closed to seeing images in BW? Its a question I am debating now. May be I was too hung upon Impressionist art.... I need to rethink :)
