Bear Lapse
I made this image at 10mm to give a feel of the habitat at Daroji. Actually, I was there trying to make some Timelapse movies, an initial musing, propelled to a new fascination thanks to VMR, who played a very key role in taking me beyond the border line and pushing me down the cliff, Thanks Sir!! :) This image is actually a grab from the Timelapse footage I made that day.
My main intention of going wide was to show the Bears in their habitat, and also take into consideration the dynamics of the Cloud play in the overcast sky which added a new dimension to the way we see Bears in Daroji. Of course a single still image wont convey that, but thats why I have provided the link to the Youtube video at the bottom, so you can see what I have been talking about. I however, was hoping that the Bears had walked towards the camera for a nice wideangle closeup, but instead they had other plans and disappeared behind a boulder. I guess, I have to be happy and settle with this for the time being.

The link for the video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=usNbP0aSods The video has no audio, but as it is shot in HD its best enjoyed in HD. Hit on the HD link at the bottom right hand of the Video window, for max fun, and HD with full screen is even better ;-)

Thanks for looking

Nice interesting habitat of Daroji here Harsha. Saw the video. Is this a series of photos converted to a video ? May be a short note on the process would help. Back to the image, wish the bear was on the left stone. Didn't see it there on the video too :)

Harsha, Nice perspective image here. BTW I liked the videos more. Could you please elaborate bit on the approach. Does this time elapsed shooting feature from pro level video cams?

Thanks for the interest Ganesh / Shankar. I have used my regular 40D camera here for this video, and is a result of combining 384 individual images shot a 3 sec interval over a span of 30 mins approximately. I have used no pro level video cams ;) I have listed the process and equipment list below.
Equipment list
EOS 40D
Sigma 10-20 (@10 mm)
10 stop Singhray Variable ND filter (dialed at 4 stops)
Canon TC80N3 Timer Remote (Thanks to VMR for both this and the ND filter)
An electronic Telescope mount modified to take the 40D for the panning (http://www.celestron.com/c3/product.php ... &ProdID=29 )

I have also uploaded a couple of pictures of the setup equipment just in case at the link below
http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/sredir?u ... feat=email

Process
I dialed in a 3 sec time interval in the timer remote to fire a frame at every 3 seconds. I then achieved an exposure of 1/40sec at f8 with the ND filter dialed in to reduce 4 stops of light, (any higher reduction of light on the ND was leading to serious vignetting at 10 mm, so had to settle at 4 stops). My image quality was set at JPEG L. I then programmed my telescope head to pan at 3X (earth rotates at 8X) in the horizontal direction from the Right to Left. And I let the setup fire for 30mins approx.

Video generation
After downloading the JPEGs I did a batch processing of the entire lot using Light Room. The editing included Cropping in the 16:9 format for HD conversion and basic light/color/saturation fixes. Then I used Quicktime Pro to combine all these individual frames into a movie file at 30 frames per second, to get the final output.

Hope this was informative. Please let me know if you need additional details, and I will be happy to share.

and Ganesh, the Bears climbed the boulder from behind, they (three bears) walk into the frame from the left before climbing and disappearing behind the boulder. I was actually hoping they would walk towards the camera as that would have yielded a more interesting perspective.

Harsha, To me this is fantastic and Kudos to your labourious effort. I specifically liked the Hampi videos. Thank you for sharing the knowledge.

Hi Harsha,
Very creative visualisation indeed. How a small part placed or captured perfectly helps a perspective. You've captured the true spirit of a habitat and the scale of the bear too stirs something I am unable to fathom at the moment. The video terminology is new and quite fascinating esp the dialling part. I'm finding myself a rookie here :(
On the flip side it's an opportunity to learn.
Thanks for sharing

In essence a true Daroji image, would love to see it in a coffee table book on Daroji. It was fun getting all together and doing the timelapse vidoes
