Funnel Spider
Back from a few days trip to Western Ghats/foot hills. Spent some time making some images of the micro world. Here is one of them and another version with a different lighting below.

I really like the colors in the top one but I like the DOF of the spider in the bottom image.

The first one has a nice warm color and feel to it. I dont mind the lack of DOF

Second one, for the DOF.. and the first one for the warmth :)
:( Missed all the fun this time :(

First one works best for me, Ganesh. Soft tones mix well with the shallow DOF. TFS.

Actually Ganesh, can I change my opinion here :-) ? I like the second one better, once the awe factor of the warm light has phased out in the first image, am beginning to really find more mood in the second one, the spread of the legs of the spider and the white web in dew is working better for me today :-). It appears very natural now for my eyes, very soothing too. Yes, am absolutely certain, it's the bottom one for me. What about your thoughts and why ?

It's a very tough question Ganesh. Though they look identical, to me, they both convey different moods. The first one with shallow dof and warm colors makes more of dreamy image. Second one with more dof and muted colors makes the image more 'realistic'. Having passed by these spiders and their web almost every day, in the second image I can feel the mist and cold of the atmosphere.
I ma sure selection of different apertures is not accidental, but deliberately chosen. The dof plays crucial factor in both the images.
I am still in dilemma which one to choose, but they both appeal me for different reasons.

I love the first version. Warmth of the orange glow goes well with all moods! Second one looks bland for my taste buds though the effect on the web is better in the second one.

Ok, here is the next version of it. The light you see here are combination of torch and flash. All made before sun rays hit the web.

This one might look good on large print esp the details in and around eyes. But at this size, I would still go with first version. Do share what is going through your mind based on these experiments and views :D

This one is not working for me Ganesh after seeing first two versions. First two are very clear in their motive, first one depicting colorful and dreamy mood second one with muted colors associated with soft feelings. This one falls between the two and stops my mind to move in any direction. May be I am biased after seeing first two images.
Would like to know your views.

I am actually very intrigued to know why did you decide to use a warm light source ? You made this image before sunrise to avoid the warmth , right ?? I know the other reasons are to have the dew intact, no breeze, and the subjects are still static but you could have got all that as long as the sun's rays are soft. ( at least 10-15 mins ). The initial soft rays of the sun , don't they work better than the warm external light source ?

Nilanjan, what if the sun rays don't reach the web till it becomes harsh (7:30-8am) ? :) Also, I had a different experiment in mind.

I was experimenting with two sources of light which are at opposite end of the spectrum (of mood). Off shoe flash was on a cooler side and torch was on much warmer side. The question I had in mind was/is - is it possible to create images which kind of portray mixed emotions using different spectrum of light which falls apart in mood ? I am yet to conclude my experiments still. I tend to think it is possible, but the nature of the subjects need to come together too for that to happen. I have several more in this series. May be some day I will try to pen my thoughts around it..
