A little form
I am not sure where this journey of nature photography finally leads to. Of late most of my images does not satisfy me emotionally. A very few like this one gives me some satisfaction.
Mind needs some thing very different. A distant voice is inviting. This reminds me of Dr Gopalakrishna Adiga's poem - "Yaava mohana murali kareyitho" in Kannada.
The melody of the remote flute is feebly audible. The mind wants to go there, hopefully it will reach there some day....

PS : On a glossy display subtle nuances of texture and mood of this image will go missing.

Some very personal feelings on seeing this image:
1) Growing up, Ganesh, i used to read a lovely series of stories about Thama, the marii aaney, by Kamala Laxman - illustrated by RK Laxman. It informed a lot of my affinity for this species, early on. But none of my images ever evoked that feeling in me (after i came back from the field). But this one, yours, did that just now. And memories of Thama came rushing back - especially when it willfully wanders off and finds itself in unsure, unfamiliar territory. When an image can evoke such a powerful memory or emotion, it must be truly special. This one, to me, is.
2) this seems like a metaphor for the journey one is on. lots to transcend, grow into... and a path that curves into hazy oblivion (or so it seems) and maybe a calling lies beyond... contrasting the gritty nature of the little form.

i may discover further layers of my own mind when i see this image in the future... which is at once lonely and endearing.
thanks!
A

Beautiful Ganesh....Last month when we were there , we spent 6 evenings with the babies ..and there was one little one which always stayed away from the herd...till late evening...every day.
We were always worried about it and looked at it every 5 minutes or so...while shooting the other young ones..One day we even found it all alone in the morning in the grass land...may be it is the same one...donno ...maybe..

I enjoyed ,....my photography...after a long long time.....whenever Iam with the elephants....I KNOW iam doing the right thing in my life....
thank you for taking me there again...and I agree with you ...a glossy pic may not do justice to this image...

thanks for sharing...

Ganesh, this image is soulful, if I may use that word to describe the scene. It reminds me of a baby elephant we saw in the grassland, it had wandered away, quite far from its herd. The sense of despair we all felt versus the beauty of a lone young thing in the middle of grass two times its height was a clash.

This is how we all are headed.. wandering off the path, alone, re-discovering, learning :)

This is so much more than an image Ganesh.. Thank you :)

I had something in my mind to comment but after scrolling down i just realised Radha has expressed exactly what i wanted to tell. We are in a journey where we are "wandering off the path, alone, re-discovering, learning". The journey has lots of ups-downs and good-bad and joy-sorrows. Sometimes it happens that the images that we make convey what we are going through and other times we are lost in the journey.

Love the reference to the song. Apparently one of my all time favorites.

And.. taking radha's pointand going a little off-track... "wandering off the path..." making new paths... maybe the little elephant is not lost, has not wandered off in despair... maybe that is its calling :) The calling is NOT the path... and it realizes that, and is swishing its tail in joy at having found freedom!

There is a new world ahead of it :) .... like a Jonathan Livingstone Elephant!

"Of late most of my images does not satisfy me "
i remember to have read
"an artist is always hungry, he dies of starvation" ...

I think i read this about 25years back and related it to actual hunger for food, well it took quite a long number of years for me to get the meaning it meant.

Is the little calf walking away from the path we created for our use Ganshi ? I am seeing a separation of our worlds in this image, is it that the young beautiful life does not feel comfortable with us anymore ? What have we done re Ganshi ? I have been thinking lately, that even after spending 15 years in research and in some of the state of the art facilities across the world, have I only contributed to hasten up the end ? Not seeing or not realizing the very purpose of our presence here in this beautiful world ? It is indeed frustrating.....
