Bat at Night
Last week I was in a remote village situated near Karnataka-Kerala border. Having visited this place a few times now I found a small hillock where a few bats fly over it every day after sunset. During this visit I climbed this small hillock everyday after sunset hoping to make an image of these bats at night. Unfortunately conditions are less than ideal. I just had about ten minutes time around 6:45pm at which time these bats cross-over. I was hoping to capture the mood of night with some deep blue sky and a bat lit using a gentle flash light. I could have made a close-up of these bats using a longer tele but I thought that would dilute the night mood I wanted to convey. These bats were flying a few meters above me. The big challenge was not enough light. During recent years I always thought limitation is within me, not with my equipments but this one is an exception. Wish I had a strobe or some better lighting mechanism. Torch lights, Better Beamer flash extender etc did not work. Getting focus and accurate panning at forced slower shutter speeds was another issue. Here is just an attempt at portraying what I had in mind. But I had enormous learning in terms of making images of bats at night. Hopefully I will be able to use some of it at some more photo-friendly place in the near future..

PS : This image may need accurately calibrated display. On an un-calibrated display the sky may appear dark black instead of very deep blue.

well I don't have anything to say. Simply zapped by the commitment it takes to bring out such images. Indeed there is a lot to learn just by looking at your pictures and reading your blogs!

I know exactly how it feels standing on top of that hillock and waiting for bats that passes by! 10-15 minutes is the window time and you spend the entire day planning for it. The real challenge is maintaining the same level of commitment and patience and not to mention about frustration that creeps in! The effort that has gone to make this image is just astounding. May be my words fail how much ever I write here. Kudos for the attempt! Bows to your never give-up attitude.

Having personally stood in that place watching them fly above your head trying to analyse how to make images of these beauties - i really know how difficult it is to come back with a satisfactory image of this kind. I would say that your ground work and planning before you have executed this shot is outstanding. An image which def deserves 3 cheers from my end.
