Art of Destruction
It may be fashionable to talk about destruction caused by dams that we build. Needless to say dams do serve our energy/drinking water/irrigation needs. Hopefully nature knows how to balance all these conflicting needs (and greeds).

50 years ago Linganamakki Dam was built and about 250 square kilometers of dense Western Ghats jungles got destroyed and submerged in back waters of Linganamakki Dam.
Today, after 50 years we can only stare at miles and miles of those muted evidences (dead trees) in back waters. While we appear as a little speck in this vast scape of dead trees in water
we as a species seem to posses all the power to cause imbalance in nature. Hopefully, we are still part of nature and nature takes control when needed..

Like the stark rendering. Goes with the emotion being conveyed. Like the feeling of scale as well. as you said the tinyness of mankind

Art is about what is inside rather than what is outside

What a powerful image, the bringing of the elements in the right proportion really makes the image. I think its extremely important to convey conservation related work through such uncluttered images rather than through elaborate prose. One thing which comes to mind after see this image is, it makes me guilty that we humans in the development mode are an ongoing threat to the natural world.

Hi Ganesh, The scale of the trees in the image puts an element of fear in my mind. Amazing image which needs very little or no words to explain the situation.

A very powerful image, Ganesh! Having seen this place closely all I can say is this image perfectly represents the situation there. The man standing here represents the affected villager for me. TFS.

Best regards,
Prashanth

Have been looking at this image since couple of days and it keeps growing on me. What I love the most are:

1. The relative positioning of the human element to the distant continuous vertical lines.
2. The 'sleeping stump' near the center of the frame add a lot to the image.

Wonderful image Ganesh! What I liked here is that you captured someone as witness to the tale of destruction. Very powerful image in my opinion.
Thanks for sharing

I can imagine the enthusiasm, celebration during the time of construction of the dam. A newly independent country's ambitious to build big dams, factories in the quest to show it's power... And it was the necessity f the day...
When I stand in front of those 'living' trees after 50 years I tremble with fear and guilt. I ask myself "was it really necessary?" ...Debatable...

The fact that we are helpless and can't do anything hurts me.

I am surprised by you calling this destruction as art.

Sir

I love this image of yours as I visualise totally a different connotation from the the previous comments....! J Krishnamurty, a renowned seer and world teacher, talked much on 'choiceless awareness'. To understand this, one requires immediacy and urgency of awareness....! This image wherein a human being in front of dead stumps of trees tells us a very spiritual story of 'Choicelessness'. Life is full of such dead desires and one gets easily engulfed in this vicious circle of poisonous desires of worldly affairs and ultimately one gains nothing but a great void of nothingness..!If one chooses nothing and becomes a pure witness......what will happen? This is the real existential question captured in this very beautiful image....!Sir, this image is worthy enough to spread a light of spiritual consciousness....! Monocromatic conversion makes this image mystified.....sooting water surface creates meditative ambiance.....and LIGHT makes this image live, soulful and enchanting....Thanks a lot Sir..! Regards....!

Adithya, on your comment -

I am surprised by you calling this destruction as art.

I am not suggesting "destruction can be art" but unfortunately here it appeared like one for me!

Ghanshyam,

Very interesting thoughts there! Thanks for your views..
