9. Anant Kamat
10. Mahesh Devarajan & his friend
11. Raviprakash
12. Vidyun
13. Vihaan

Yes a good event. Some salient points

- Shankar Kiragi had made a number of prints on a few different papers. There was a discussion around inherent texture in paper and context in which it works (Shankar can add here ?)
- There was a chance to compare prints on various papers - Hahnemuhle, Baryta , Epson matt etc. The tones , rendering and shadows
- Ganesh had printed the same picture in various sizes. It was interesting to see how shadows open up and show details when size of the print is increased
- Ganeh's large print of wasp nest 4X5 feet gave a chance to examine prints from various distance and also light conditions
- Ramesh and Vipin presented some prints - Ramesh delicate tone in BnW. Vipin large color prints of macro subject

Others can add some points
Art is about what is inside rather than what is outside

It was great meet indeed after 2 years of gap and venue was ideal. All thanks to Ravi & Vikas who made it possible.
It was a treat to see large format camera from Ganesh. It's the new addictive to me. Ashwin’s rare vintage lenses and their results were phenomenal.
Extra Large prints from Ganesh were eye opener how light and details can play with respect to the size of images. I especially liked Hampi’s river side image.

After several years (16 plus years) I made an attempt to print my images. I had a plan to print some of my images which coincided with this print meet.
Some of my approach and learnings from the printing experience.

- I decided to print my images on different type of papers. It was my intention that my images to look like art pieces rather than usual photo prints. For my initial couple of images, I went for Epson plane paper, but immediately switched to textured paper from Hahnemuehle.
- Some of the images work very well with textured papers. It enhances the mood and image quality.
- It appears to me that Hahnemuehle is the one of top few leaders in the digital fine art print papers. May be Hahnemuehle papers are benchmark in the industry.
- Due to lack of physical sample papers, I went for available papers at that point of time.
- In this my first attempt I printed most images on textured paper (Albercht Durer) which come under matt textured series with 210 gsm. But the problem with this paper is that pattern is unidirectional mild stripes. I realized that I need omni directional pattern with random and sparsely spaced non repetitive patterns. Next time I will be trying Torchon, Photo Rag, Photo Rag Duo which I believe are in line with my taste and visualization.
- I avoided glossy paper; due to reflections they may create, however I will be trying couple of them from the Hahnemuehle series (e.g., Photo Rag Satin, Baryta etc.)
- Each time we print it’s always better to take test prints (4x5 or 5x6) prior to large final prints
- Mounting of images another key task especially with the available mounts, workmanship and more importantly the size and ratio of the border, so in my next attempt, I plan to allow the border from the print paper itself.
- My sincere thanks to all my beloved friends for the feedbacks

Best Wishes
Cheers, Shankar Kiragi

We also had a brief discussion on different paper's ability to render blacks. A measure of the paper's ability to render blacks is given by DMAX (Maximum Density). It is an inverse measure of reflectance of a paper: that is paper's ability to absorb light. Usually higher the DMAX, better is the paper's ability to render blacks as blacks. Generally, matte papers have lower DMAX than glossy papers. What it means is that blacks look blackish on glossy papers than matte papers. DMAX is only one of the measures. Richness of shadows and blacks on the final print is determined by several qualitative aspects like overall contrast of the image, quality of the ambient light used to view the print, ink/printer quality, etc.

Finally it is a call the photographer has to make: how does one want to render blacks. A rich blackish black may not add to the image all the time. To convey the mood of the image, the photographer may want softer contrast and mellowed blacks. Hence it is better to know these characteristics and how different papers render blacks to make the right choice of the paper to suit the image better. In the end, photographer's artistic intent should drive the choices.

I had shared a print of Jog Falls on Hahnemühle PhotoRag Baryta, a glossy paper to illustrate the richness of blacks that this paper can render. This paper has a DMAX of 2.45 on EPSON P800 (the printer that I use). On the other hand, I had also shared couple of images from my favourite Indian Almond Tree series printed on EPSON Archival Matte, a very basic printing paper (I think a DMAX of 1.6 or 1.7). I was very pleased with these prints too. Thus the story of printing paper goes on...

Thanks for uploading the images, Ashwin. This gives a feel for what happened in the meet for those who could not attend :)

Just to add to some of the views expressed above and to help some of our friends who have not printed their images:

- Unless you print you have missed a large part of the "photography" itself.
- Nuances of the prints, variety of papers/canvases etc need to be experienced. I can't explain how a cashew tastes, so is the feel of holding a print!
- Be prepared - you will invariably go wrong with your choice of paper/canvas and what paper to use for what image. After trying to make prints for a few years
my confidence of making a satisfying print is 50%. Many things can go wrong and they will too. Only way to get over is to make mistakes, may be using small prints
on various media. An image that looks fabulous on screen may turnout uninteresting as print and vice-versa.
- Inspite of all the caveats when it works it will be very satisfying.

Give it a try! If possible join our next print meet :)

I got a few images printed this time. The large 4x6 feet print of this image below was one of them.

image_id: 19457

I was not sure how a print would turn out. I am happy with how it looks on screen. I like the print for some reasons but not totally happy. Interestingly it seem to look better as vertical print but I wanted it in landscape mode. Madhav, your suggestion in the thread above is correct :) I am not totally happy with the print for a few reasons:

1. Compared to the screen version of the posted image, the print is a little more sharper for my taste. I could have kept it a tad softer - a definite after thought.
2. I did not manage shadows optimally across the frame in the print version.
3. The print has some color cast in some regions I guess, I tried to get it corrected but still it seem to show up I guess.

Summary being, I will be trying it again. May be next time in a smaller size. That said vertical presentation seem to work better at a certain viewing distance.

The couple of other prints turned out good. Especially I liked this one as a print:

image_id: 19640

More than my prints I liked Shankar's artistic prints!! Thanks Shankar for getting them printed and sharing!

Thanks to Ashwin for bringing his very interesting collection of classic old lenses and demoing them to us!! Very interesting collection indeed.

It was indeed a pleasure to meet you all. Thanks VIpin for travelling all the way to attend the meet and share his finely detailed macro photography prints and learnings!

It was a very actively participated and vibrant print meet. Thanks a lot Ravi and Vikas for organising it. Thanks Ashwini for capturing the memories of the meet.

Ganesh has clarified why we need to print by saying " unless you print you have missed a large part of the "photography" itself". And you don't want to miss that.

Next big question is what do you print? There were varied responses to this question during the meet.

I will make a separate thread for this topic for ease of reference on this.

Ashwin,
Thanks for the images and great portraits. I presume these are taken by zenitar vintage (normal focal) with Nikon Z6II.
Images and colors speaks for the lenses.
