Print Sharing session - 30th Nov

Postby Rajkumar » Sun Nov 24, 2019 9:10 am

Hi All ,

Time for the next print sharing session
Date : 30th November

Venue : National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA ) Palace road

Time: 2.30 PM

There is an ongoing exhibition of more than about 50-60 prints by Prabudhha Das. A real education in terms of tonal values, print quality and also framing and presenting. So the idea is to review as a group and discuss the observations. Also NGMA has a lovely quaint Cafeteria we can also sit down and review any prints if participants bring along

See you all there.
Thanks

Hi All,

Good session looking at the exhibits and discussing some learnings / un-learnings

Some key points

1. White framing looks elegant. The question was whether applicable in all situations ?
2. Extending the print paper itself as border seemed to work well especially to eliminate another shade of white with the paper board. However, the print then sticks to the glass
3. The if a glass used for the framed print then lighting is important and print to be tilted a bit downwards to avoid self reflection of viewer

4. The grain of films and grain digitally created is completely different aesthetically and film grains looks beautiful

5. Viewing prints from the right distance is very critical ( minimum distance diagonal of print ) otherwise decisions are more technical driven rather than overall feel and aesthetics driven. Like a blown-out white area looks very bad on close observation but from a distance, it can be a part of the overall feel

Others can add to the points

Raj,

A point to add based on many frames that were hung on the walls - leave enough mat space!

1. In past I used this calculator to decide a "good" mat space.

2. We also found enough frames in NGMA which used Bottom Weighting for more appealing presentation.

It was a nice get together! Thank you all!
