This image Works for Me, White BG and Naked Branches always Tell story and Bird add to the image.. It is Good Idea not to make Mono for this image.. Due to Barbet (I think so) it a Colorful and beautiful bird their Colors should not be vanished. I am Thinking Vertical Composition. TFS.

It is a fine decision on your part to not converting this into B&W. The color of the bird pulls this off in my view. A fine image here..
