I made a few pre-visualized images at Ramanagar today from lighting perspective. We found this butterfly (?) at a perfect place in a shaded area. Thank God - light was pretty bad and it was cloudy early in the morning. This gave us some opportunities to try something different from use of light perspective. I used 3 main light sources for this image - 2 flash lights and the built-in flash. The butterfly is lit by warm flash light while the flower is lit by one with slightly cooler white balance and bottom part of the flower is lit by built in flash. The part I liked here is how multiple light sources worked together to get this effect. Love to know your thoughts.

My sincere thanks to Pramod without his help I would not have made this image. As always, thanks for your views..

This has come out really well Ganesh. It was an awesome learning for me today as to how the lighting has a profound effect on the images that we make. Every element in the image looks so natural to me. The amount of patience you have in making one perfect image is just phenomenal! Impeccable effect brought out in the image. Can't find any defects in it! Sheer Class. Can't wait any longer to read the article "Visual Emphasis"...

Visual emphasis of this image is kind of unique. Its clearly showing two shades of light, both the cool as well as the warmth of the yellow light. What I would love to learn from this image is how do you take readings during these kind of shoot and determine the GN value of the flash. Or is it that you reduced the GN value by experience to such a value so that it does not interfere with the other external light sources and as evident from this image, the flash did its job by not interfering with the effect you desired from both the cool and the warm light. I simply love this effect here.:)

Nilanjan, I underexposed the built in flash by about 3-stops just to add a trace of light to the bottom portion of the flower. The output was precisely determined by trial and error so that it does not interfere with the other two sources of light. No way we can determine these using light meter. I have another image made using just camera flash which clearly justifies the trouble we took to make this image using three different sources of light..

Every image you make is a unique learning to me sir! Cant tell you how many times I think "Now what would Ganesh have done different here?" The lighting technique you have described is truly thinking out of the box and I must say it has turned out well here. Thanks for answering Nilanjan's question as I was about to ask you the same.

Amazing. Can see the warm & cool colours on the butterfly & flower. First I thought of saying that it wud"ve been better if u'd shot from a lower angle, but then I realizd that theflower will not be visible in the way it now from a lower perspective.
Well, good thing for u is that butterfly sat there all the while during ur experiments, trial & errors !!! :D :P

This is superb image of Skipper butterfly Ganesh... I really liked the lighting here, this reminds me of John Shaw's photographs (sorry to compare with him... :)

What an execution.. The use of light to slightly lit up the bottom of the flower works tremendously well..
