A Landscape
While macro lenses help us zooming in on a miniature world to witness the mysteries of Nature up close, wide angle lenses often do little justice to experience the Nature in its all grandeur. That is when large formats and large prints come in handy. While no print is a replacement for the experience of standing in front of a scene like this in Nature, they do help us imagine an experience. On web displays seeing/sharing such a tiny image strip is useless. However, I do hope exchanging some notes on what to expect in a large print along with the image itself may help us imagine what Nature has to offer.

I made this image at Bharatpur. This is a stitch of 11 hundred megapixels files measuring 8555 x 54793 pixels which can be used to make a fine print of approximately 3 feet by 18 feet with some borders. A small 2 inches x 2.5 inches crop of such a print of this image may reveal details like this below.

Even a dragonfly in this scene on a grass blade should be visible on such a print. Now, think of a large mystery of what we call a 'landscape' which includes mysteries in smaller macro world! If this does not humble us what else can? After all we are talking about just a 500mts x 500mts area of Bharatpur, which is a small town in Rajasthan state of India, which is just one country on this planet earth, which just a fifth largest planet of an insignificant sun out of 200 billion suns in our milky way galaxy which is just one galaxy out of about 2 trillion galaxies in the observable universe!
If this does not bring us, the 'Nature Photographers', to our knees, what else can?

Needless to say my creativity is limited to some careful thoughts on planning the stitch and execution.

A related post on grains in digital prints is here.
You may download and see a slightly larger version here (1000x6405 pixels).

I have a few other variations of this landscape which I may share later.

What else to add? Love to see the print to enjoy both at micro and macro level. May be, color print will help us to see some minute details which otherwise might get lost among twigs, leafs, etc.,.

Technology advancements open many horizons in human mind to reality and this is one of them. From distant galaxies to tiny grass or dragonfly all are relative in their own perspective to make universe a endless mystery.

Need to see in large print. This is great effort to portray in such a scale Ganesh. Thanks for sharing.

Wonderful image, Ganesh. I think the minute details the the camera can capture is amazing also the margin for error is also minimal I believe. So technically it's not an easy task to pull out. Wish to see a large print of this one day.

For some reason I like the mood conveyed in the other image of the Sarus cranes more than this. May be just me. Is it because of
capping the whites at around 220 in this case (plus added Ilford FP4) grains
? I'm sure you must've thought of it already.

Best Regards

Prashanth, you are right. The intent however was to show the finer details as a large print which can't be shown at this size. Nuances of grains and white clipping etc. in the previous post of the tree has a different artistic intent (which was not supposed emphasise details). I will post couple of more images with this artistic intent (grains/tones/lack of details etc) in a few days. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

You said you can print it 3 feet *18 feet without extrapolation.
This web representation surely looks like a mockery of what you have envisioned and executed.

Hope to see a printed version of this image in near future.
