When Green is not Good
Environmental Photography (my primary interest) often involves making images of rather ugly things. Unfortunately, therein lie the compelling stories of our times. The challenge for me will be to document these stories in visually interesting, even creative ways ~ Beltra's (and other such) work is pure inspiration. Images that tell stories, for me, are important. Which is why i hazard posting this image here :)

I am not sure it qualifies as creative or belongs in this forum - please let me know if it does not.

The story it tells though, is a sad one.
This green water is a highly eutrophic lake in the center of mysore, called Kukkarahalli Kere. It once used to supply water to the whole city. Today waste and sewage - untreated - goes straight into it, causing this high degree of eutrophication. Needless to say, the water is not potable as is, anymore. The lake is still beautiful in parts, supporting lots of wildlife including crocs, pelicans, spoonbills, painted storks, herons, keelbacks, rat snakes and so many more.

But this green is not good.

Hi Arati, my knowledge about story telling environmental photography zero. While I can't offer a useful comment on the image I would like to know your thoughts on how much you rely on image itself and how much you rely on verbal description along with the image to tell such stories. Thanks for sharing.

Hi ganesh,
I would say, an image should make you ask questions. It ideally should make you think. What's going on? Why are things the way shown in an image?
This does make you ask, make you think.
The image should work hard (like they have said in the Oil Spillage series of 6 images - the series should work without words) to trigger thoughts in your mind. And maybe a few words as a caption answer those questions. Captions, i believe are important to set some context to an image.

On a more personal level, i still have far to go to achieve the "unsupported yet vocal" image!!

Maybe my image doesn't belong on this forum...? i am still exploring what does and what may not :)

hmm. Photography cannot only be beautiful photos of beautiful subjects. For example is not our duty to show poaching or road kills to evoke awareness or reaction from viewers ? Can we not make thought provoking but aesthetic pictures of a road kill ? I am sure it could be a complete series if one took it up as a subject ?

Art is about what is inside rather than what is outside

Fitment to the forum is not an issue here Arati.

Any images of nature is fine as long as it is not a simple copy, as long as it makes us stare at it for a while to think about it, as long as it puzzles us, as long as it... :)

Very interesting image.

Infact, CNP did branch out on telling stories but as I mentioned during the meet we did not have the inventory to keep it running.
In case you have not had the look here is one where images and text is combined to send the message across.

I really like Beltras' series, the whole set brings a very strong emotional response. Wish people in India start something like that.
