An excellent image, Nevil. The root will some day find what it is looking for. It is a long search by the nature and for the nature! I am always amazed why this happens in nature. I know the answer is "that is the way it works" but that sounds very unaesthetic to me.

Well, as a farmer my instinct's first concern would be the wall of the well, the roots may damage it
